days after securing an apartment in mauville hills, dane is assigned to defend a rocket hideout not too far from it. some may call it fate; he calls it dumb luck.[break][break]

"they're about two minutes out."[break][break]

he relays what he hears to his partner for the evening. with his identity (mostly) hidden behind his face mask, he turns and asks,[break][break]

"are you comfortable fighting in a SANDSTORM?"[break][break]

Frank was an accountant. He was supposed to be behind a desk, crunching numbers to make sure Team Rocket was meeting its budget constraints. The most he did "in the field" was drive along smuggling routes to deliver Pokémon or other valuable resources. He did not fight. [break][break]

Yet there he was, unluckily assigned to guard a hideout with some other grunt. Perhaps it was his boss' way of telling him to toughen up. There was a war about to happen, after all, wasn't there? [break][break]

"I can't say I've ever fought in one before, but sure, why not?" Frank said, sighing deeply. "Nothing can be worse than the sandstorms in Ultra Desert." [break][break]

He opened a Pokéball, releasing his Krookodile. If any Pokémon of his was going to survive a sandstorm, it was Kathy.

it seems the majority of people he's met so far have ventured into one of the rifts. he wonders why it's so commonplace to dive into danger but quickly remembers where he's at and how he's doing the same right now.[break][break]

his cacturne peels itself off the wall, bringing with it a SANDSTORM.[break][break]

dane pinches the mask over the bridge of his nose, shaping it down to stop sand from slipping through.[break][break]

"That was fast," Frank muttered as he pinched the nose of his own mask. His eyes were still exposed, though, so he raised his hand to shield them from the flying sand particles. "I'll follow your lead, all right?" [break][break]

Two League Rangers emerged from the shadows, arms raised to protect their faces from the sudden storm. Accompanying them were an Ivysaur and Dachsbun, each one already wincing from the biting sand. [break][break]

Kathy the Krookodile lumbered forward, flames gathering between her jaws to deliver a FIRE FANG to the nearest foe.

one moment, he's standing right beside Frank Caffey, and in the blink of an eye, he's gone, disappearing much like his cacturne does with its SAND VEIL.[break][break]

lit by FIRE FANG, cacturne's announces its advance with a SUCKER PUNCH that slams into the dachsbun. with its other arm, it POISON JABS the dog, then lunges back to disappear once more.[break][break]

the two rangers struggle through the SANDSTORM but they soon catch a glimpse of Frank Caffey. they start to make their approach, yelling out to surrender.[break][break]

Had Dane disappeared? Frank could barely see anything through the thick storm, though he caught a flash of fire as his Krookodile engaged with the Ivysaur. [break][break]

Shouts from the Rangers drew his attention. He held up his hands in the universal gesture of surrender, but then yelled back, "Hey! Look, I'm just a guy. There's really nothing to see here, so you can turn back around, maybe even end your shifts early?" [break][break]

But then Kathy lashed out with BRUTAL SWING, knocking the Rangers to the ground while dealing a blow to the Ivysaur.

knocked to the ground by BRUTAL SWING, the rangers scramble to get back up only to find themselves knocked prone once again by a solid kick to their temple. dane towers over them, reappearing out of the SANDSTREAM to claim their win.[break][break]

"sorry."[break][break]

he kicks once more to knock them out.[break][break]

when the SANDSTREAM eventually subsides, the rangers and their pokemon have been knocked out. the hideout has been successfully defended. all that's left is to move their equipment out as the location's compromised.[break][break]

in the middle of securing their gear, dane glances over his shoulder at his partner.[break][break]

"good fighting back there."[break][break]

It was over before Frank knew it. Dane emerged out of the SANDSTORM and pummeled the Rangers unconscious. Nearby, their Pokémon made quick work of the Ivysaur and Dachsbun. He'd hardly had to lift a finger. [break][break]

Maybe battling wasn't so bad, after all. [break][break]

"Thanks, but it was all you, really," Frank said with an easy smile as he helped Dane load the equipment into the back of an unmarked van. He often used it for smuggling cargo from city to city, but this time, they would drive it to Slateport for transfer to a new hideout. [break][break]

"How'd you disappear like that in the sandstorm? You must have a lot of training with your Pokémon."

for moments, he weighs the pros and cons of sharing with someone who remains a stranger, a colleague at best, but he figures it's a good step towards making an ally.[break][break]

he raises his hands and gestures in vague, sliding movements as though it'd help with his explanation.[break][break]

Frank could not imagine it from Dane's explanation, but he nodded anyway, as if he understood. "Huh! You make it sound so easy," he said with a shake of his head, as if unable to believe such a thing could be possible. "Maybe you can show me how you do it sometime, yeah?" [break][break]

They finished loading up the van. Frank then turned to the two Rangers, still lying unconscious on the ground nearby. [break][break]

"What do we do with them?" he asked, gesturing. Despite signing up to join a terrorist organization, he didn't feel like taking two lives. [break][break]

Plus, murder would complicate things. The two grunts would have to dispose the bodies, and who's to say they would be able to get away with it?

he nods even if he's unsure if he'd ever show Frank Caffey the intricacies of utilizing a SANDSTORM. that's part of what makes him valuable as an asset, after all, and sharing that may very well hinder him.[break][break]

after they've loaded up the van, dane turns to the two unconscious rangers as well before shrugging.[break][break]
